First Baptist Church was in Divernon for over 100 years and was established in 1902. Many people in our little town recall going to Sunday School here as young children, and many of our folks were faithful members for a long time. In 2009, First Baptist voted to close it’s doors and moved to nearby Chatham, Illinois. Look at First Baptist’s 75th Anniversary Booklet, from way back in 1977!
After the church closed, several former members had a burden for Divernon and decided to band together and form a new church. That church is now Faith Baptist, and we even managed to purchase the same building back!
We are an independent Baptist church, standing firmly on the bedrock of Scripture and orthodox Christian doctrine, such as (1) the inerrancy of Scripture, (2) the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, (3) the substitutionary atonement of Christ for sinners, on their behalf, (4) the literal, bodily resurrection of Christ from the dead, and (5) the authenticity of miracles in the Biblical record, and many others as well. Moreover, we believe these precious truths must be defended against attack from both unbelievers and, occasionally, compromising and erring Christians. As Baptists, we hold to the distinctly Biblical practice of baptism by immersion only after true repentance from sins and saving faith in Jesus Christ, and other historic aspects of Baptist polity.
We sing the old hymns of the faith, and conduct our worship in a manner and style appropriate to the holiness our God calls us to exercise (1 Peter 1:15-16). We stand for personal and corporate separation from sin and we affirm the need to try our best to live holy lives, acceptable unto God, and act as a light for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as we patiently await His blessed and promised return for His children. We pray that you will consider joining our congregation, as we live for the Lord together.
